Dr Paul Hughes has joined Wollongong Eye Specialists after 12 years at the Vision Eye Institute, Hurstville. Dr Hughes has well over 35 years of experience in cataract and refractive surgery (including ASLA and LASIK). In recent years Dr Hughes has focused his career on laser vision correction, including topography-guided LASIK (known as Contoura) and general ophthalmology.
Dr Hughes earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at University of New South Wales and completed his ophthalmology training at Guy's Hospital and St Mary's Hospital in London, UK. During his impressive career, Dr Hughes has been instrumental in improving ophthalmic practice in Australia and globally. He has many 'firsts' attached to his name including:
Dr Hughes is actively involved in ophthalmic research, speaks regularly at international ophthalmic meetings, has been published in peer-reviewed journals and has frequently appeared on national radio and television. He was involved in collecting data for the largest published series of laser-assisted cataract surgeries performed in the world to date. This data demonstrated that using laser technology during cataract surgery is safer and more precise than manual technology.
Dr Hughes has now decided to serve the Illawarra community, a place where he first worked in the early 1970s.
